Muriel Jane Meggs Simmons, 72, of Fleming Island, FL died Friday in a local hospital. Mrs. Simmons was a native of Columbus County, NC and was a resident of Columbus County as a child. She was a graduate of the Clarkton High School class of 1957 where she was a member of the Beta Club, Basketball team, FHA, Bible Club, C Club, Glee Club, French Club, Senior Editor of the yearbook, and performed many duties associated with being the Chief Marshall as a junior. She was a resident of Clay County, FL since 1967 where she worked as a registered nurse for the Orange Park Medical Center and retiring from the North Florida OB/GYN. In 1995, she moved to Holden Beach, NC for retirement. She returned to Clay County just a month prior to her death.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years Terry Simmons, 3 sons John (Rhonda) Simmons, David (Shawn) Simmons and Douglas (Rickie) Simmons, 3 brothers Gerald L. Meggs, Robert W. Meggs and Kenneth S. Meggs, 7 grandchildren, Ashlie, Shelby, Kyle, Megan, Emily, Matthew and Jason.
Memorial Services will be held 12:00, Noon, Monday, August 8, 2011 in the Russell Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Baker officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 11:00-Noon prior to services.
