Many veterans neither request nor expect special recognition for their contributions. However, we believe American veterans of all ages and from all branches of service deserve respect and gratitude for their selfless, courageous commitment to military service for the protection of our freedoms. Therefore, Russell Haven of Rest Cemetery has a designated Veterans Section with a beautifully designed memorial to give special tribute to those men and women who have proudly served in the United States armed forces during times of war. The cast bronze plaque below Old Glory reads: In Memory of All American Veterans, This memorial honors all American veterans who, although separated by generations, shared a common, undeniable goal – to valiantly protect our country’s freedoms. The memories of these American veterans will continue to live on whenever and wherever democracy exists. The American veteran – forever a symbol of heroism, sacrifice, loyalty, and freedom.
The back of the memorial is reserved for the inscription of veterans’ names. The following quote, taken from the American Veterans’ Cemetery at Normandy, France, highlights this space: Think not only upon their passing, Remember the glory of their spirit.
Though veterans generally ask for no recognition, most families and neighbors of veterans have the desire to give special tribute for their service and dedication to the United States Armed Forces and to the protection of democracy in our country. The owners of Russell Haven of Rest, Jerry and Sue Campbell, have actively promoted and supported the establishment of the Military Museum in Clay County for the purpose of preserving our American history and facilitating the education of future generations. Jerry is a founding member if the board of directors and can share how you can help with this project. Jerry served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and Sue’s father served in the Pacific during World War II. Military service is a great part of the heritage of both sides of the family.
An annual Memorial Day ceremony on our grounds gives local citizens an opportunity to reflect and to honor those who have given so much.
Even before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the cemetery design included an equally beautiful section that is designated for our dedicated public servants. Plans for this section also include a unique memorial to show gratitude and to honor those men and women of law enforcement, fire and rescue, and public office whose daily sacrifices secure our safety and make our community a better place.
Your veteran's name can be inscribed on the memorial for a fee of $700.00.
