Frances “June” Nelson
Frances “June” Nelson, 89, was born June 14, 1920 in Jacksonville and passed away peacefully at her home on Doctors Lake surrounded by her family. She was a resident of Orange Park for 60 years. June was a member of the Orange Park United Methodist Church where she was active in many of the ministries over the years. Her active lifestyle allowed her to chair the Methodist Women several times as well as serving as a Sunday School Teacher, planning for the 50th Anniversary of Orange Park United Methodist Church, starting Vacation Bible School where she worked along side of Dottie Sandridge or being recognized and receiving the Women’s Lifetime Membership pin. She was a charter member of the Humming Bird Garden Circle for over 50 years, volunteered in schools and community serving as president of both the OP PTO and OPHS PFA. One of her dreams was for the high school to have a football stadium, which was accomplished. She served as Supervisor of Elections for the town of Orange Park for 25 years and was on the original planning committee for the Clay County Fair Association over 25 years ago. Whether as a den mother for the Girl Scouts or as a chairman for many communities, Mrs. Nelson touched lives of those who call Orange Park home; however, her true passion was her family. She cherished the role of being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Nelson; daughters Pat (Gary) Meeks and Sandra Beatty; sister Esther Siemen; grandchildren Robert (Julia) Beatty, Todd Beatty, Bryan (Tracie) Beatty and Kyle Beatty; great-grandchildren Daizey and Donavon Beatty. She was preceeded in death by her son Samuel E. Nelson and her grandson Michael T. Scurrey. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 17 at 2pm at Orange Park United Methodist Church followed by graveside services at Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be at 1pm on Saturday, prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association (www.abta.org) in memory of her grandson Michael Scurrey. Arrangements are under the care of Russell Haven of Rest Cemetery and Funeral Home, 2315 Sandridge Road, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043 (904) 284-7720.
