Lt. Richard J. Phillips, USN Ret., of Green Cove Springs, passed away Monday, February 27, 2012. Mr. Phillips was born in Brooklyn, New York and was a long time resident of Green Cove Springs. He retired from the US Navy after 30 years of distinguished service. He served in the Pacific, as well as the Korean War and Vietnam. He served in many capacities with the Experimental Aviation Association as well as many other aviation oriented organizations and built his own plane from plans with scraps. Mr. Phillips established a scholarship program at Florida State College of Jacksonville for the Aviation Center of Excellence. He loved flying. He was an avid reader and scholar from ancient history to modern times and loved jazz and big band era music. Mr. Phillips was a trusted friend and devoted husband.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Phillips, and cousin, James Mastro.
