Evelyn B. Strickland, 97 of Green Cove Springs, died Monday, February 14, 2011. Mrs. Strickland was a member of Russell Baptist Church where she was very proud of the fact that she was the oldest member.
She is survived by her daughters that she loved so much, Jean Franklin, Clara Cox (Robert), Ingrid Strickland (daughter-in-law),grandchildren Steven Franklin (Vickie), Lora Lee Varnadoe (Jeff), Paul Christopher Meaders (Beth), Melissa Yuhas (Michael), Michele Hatalski (Duane), 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband W. Edgar Strickland, of 50 years, grandson Dale Franklin, son James R. Strickland, daughter Linda Faye Strickland who died in infancy, and, son-in-law Kenneth Franklin.
Mrs. Strickland was a true Southern Lady who always had kind words and a smile for all. She was a housewife and mother who loved her family and her church and was beautiful in every way. She grew up in a simpler time and had many talents including tatting lace, making her family’s clothes on a foot pedal sewing machine, cooking meals with recipes passed down from her mother and her mother’s mother, growing livestock and crops, and canning vegetables. She saw many hard times in her life but never complained and had a quiet, elegant demeanor. As a result, she taught her family a strong work ethic, to appreciate what they have, and the importance of the family bond. She will be missed beyond measure.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am Friday (February 18, 2011) in Russell Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Heritage Section of Russell Haven of Rest. Rev. Ron Baker and Rev. Jim White will officiate. Visitation with the family will be from 5-7:00 Thursday evening at the church.
